[Ceramics] Tamba-yaki
Masafumi Onishi
born in 1980 in Sasayama, Hyōgo, Japan, is the fourth-generation kiln master of Tanbun Kiln, a historic Tamba-yaki pottery workshop, and after graduating from the craft course at Osaka University of Arts Junior College in 2000, he trained under master potter Hiroshige Kato in Seto; in 2004 he returned to Tachikui to begin his own pottery practice, and from 2005 onward he has held solo exhibitions and shown his works at galleries and department stores across Japan and abroad, maintaining traditional climbing-kiln firings and clay sources while exploring creative, distinctive expressions such as his “Akatanba” (Red Tanba) series.
