[Lacquerware] Yamanaka Lacquerware

Keikan Tada

born in 1935 in Yamanaka Onsen, Ishikawa, Japan, began training under his father in foundational and top-coating lacquer techniques; by 1955 he had also learned wood-turning and “maki-e” decorative lacquer from master craftsmen, and over decades he became a leading figure in the tradition of 山中塗 (Yamanaka lacquerware), earning multiple regional awards (including the 1982 Ishikawa Prefectural Traditional Industry Promotion Association Chairman’s Prize) and holding regular exhibitions after the early 1980s — all while upholding his family’s multi-generation legacy and producing fine lacquer wares such as tea-ware, bowls, and tableware that combine traditional craftsmanship with refined aesthetics.
