Hosai Matsubayashi

born in 1980 in Uji, Kyoto, Japan, is the sixteenth-generation master of Asahi‑yaki pottery and after studying pottery at Kyoto Ceramic Technical School (learning wheel-throwing in 2004), he began working at Asahi-yaki in 2005; following an artist-in-residence at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, England, he formally succeeded to the name “Hosai XVI” in 2016, and since then has produced tea-ceremony ceramics combining traditional form and aesthetics with modern sensibility, which are exhibited widely in Japan and overseas. He carried forward the kiln’s heritage into the present day.
